Laurys Station, Pa 18059

Laurys Station - The village of Laurys Station was settled on a tract of land situated at the junction of the Fels Creek and the Lehigh River.  The current Mauser Street passes through the original village center.

Originally called Slate Dam, the village was renamed in honor of it's most prominent citizen, Judge David Laury.  Judge Laury (1805-1883) was responsible for building the first hotel, store, post office and gristmill.

During his lifetime he served in various civic and professional capacities including: associate county judge, State House Of Representatives, postmaster, miller and railroad general manager.

During the 1890's the Lehigh Valley Railroad Co. owned an island in the Lehigh River, located across from Laurys Station.  The island was used as a recreation area for the guests of the Laurys Hotel.

The railroad company eventually developed the property into an amusement park, complete with rides and food stands.  Laurys Island was abandoned in 1905, a few years after a severe flood.  The park along with the railroad station, hotel, mill and other original buildings are no longer in existence.
